‘Lokman was pronounced dead in the operation theatre,’ the Shahbagh police officer-in-charge, Rezaul Karim, said.

Local people and the police said that assailants had shot at Lokman, also general secretary of the Narsingdi town unit Awami League, near the bus stand about 8:00pm when he was on his way home from the party office.

Lokman was first sent to Narsingdi General Hospital and was later moved to the DMCH as on-duty physicians said he was in a critical condition.

Ruling party activist Shyamal Saha, who was accompanying Lokman, also sustained injuries in the incident. Soon after the incident, businessmen shut their establishments.

Soon after he had been shot, rumours became rife in the locality that the mayor had died from his injuries on his way to the DMCH and local people blocked on Dhaka–Chittagong railway at

Basail near Lokman’s house, suspending train communications with the eastern parts of the country about 10:00pm.

The people also set fire to the railway station, Narsingdi railway station master Maran Chnadra Das said.

Leaders and activists of the ruling party blocked the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway in Narsingdi. Hundreds of people shouting slogans continued the blockade of road and railway till 01:00am on Wednesday.

Some of the demonstrators looted shops and markets. They also vandalized the circuit house. Vehicles and houses were damaged. Gunshots were heard from some areas of the town.

Dozens of vehicles passing by were damaged on the Dhaka–Sylhet Highway.

The leaders and townsmen brought out a procession demanding immediate arrest and punishment of the killers.

Sakhawat Hussain, joint secretary of the municipality unit Awami League, announced the enforcement of the general strike at a protest in the party’s district office about 11:00pm.

Leaders and activists of the Awami League’s fronts and associate bodies brought out separate processions in the town to drum up support for the general strike.

The police visited the spot. Local people said that ruling party infighting could be a reason for the attack.

Lokman was elected municipal mayor for two terms. He was president of the Mayors’ Association of the Dhaka division. He is survived by two wives, two sons and a daughter. He was adjudged the best mayor twice.

An uneasy situation was prevailing in the town.
