Selina Hayat Ivy of the Awami League who was unofficially declared mayor-elect of Narayangaj in the first-ever elections to the newly formed city corporation on Sunday

termed it a people’s victory, saying that it was a victory against injustice, extortion and land grab.

‘It is a victory of the people. It is a victory against injustice. The people have given their mandate against extortion and land grab,’ a triumphant Ivy told reporters waiting at her house at Deobhog when she was maintaining a big lead in election results.

‘I was doubtful whether the elections would be fair with the army deployment. But the people have braved all odds to exercise their franchise and the elections were fair,’ Ivy said. ‘I said that people were my troops.’

Expressing her satisfaction at the Election Commission’s role, Ivy, who now and then accused the commission of failing to ensure a level playing field, said that it had been proved that elections could be held without the army deployment. ‘We made progress towards strengthening democracy in Bangladesh.’

In reply to a question, Ivy, a local Awami League leader the party did not lend its support to in the elections, said that he was still with the Awami League.

‘I believe in the ideals of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. I want to remain an activist of the party. I do not believe in bickering for a position in the party. I do not need any position in the party,’ she said.
