Apparel worker’s death in road accident sparks violent protest

Two more killed in separate city road accidents  


Hundreds of angry apparel workers blockaded the busy Mirpur Road in the city for nearly three hours Sunday morning in protest against the death of a female colleague in a road accident.


The protesters damaged at least 30 vehicles and clashed with the police during their violent protests which began at about 10.30 AM.


Police and local people said that the protesters took to the streets following the death of 30-year old colleague Rabu Begum.


A worker of Akik Apparels Limited, Rabu died on the spot run over by a speeding bus of Shikor Paribahan near Taltola Bus Stand at About 3 AM.


Within hours, workers from different factories gathered at the spot and blockaded the road halting traffic movement on the busy road for nearly three hours.


Police rushed to the spot to restore traffic, but the workers refused to remove the barricades to press their demand for compensation from the authorities for the victim’s family.


As the police took to baton charge the angry workers pelted stones in retaliation.


 Later, additional police force sent to the spot assured the workers that action would be taken against the bus owner.


The police held a meeting with the workers and factory owners to settle the issue.  


The police seized the bus but the driver had fled.


Rabu came from Bhola and lived at Taltola.


The workers withdrew the blockade at around 1 PM.


The victim’s body was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination.


 Kafrul police station officer-in-charge Abdul Latif said that police reinforcements from nearby police stations brought the situation under control.


He said that the police had to charge batons on the workers to bring the situation under control.


Mirpur police station officer-in-charge Kazi Wazed Ali said that the workers had damaged buses and cars on an entire stretch of the road from Shewrapara to Mirpur-10 Roundabout.


He said that the issue was settled in consultations with the authorities concerned.


At least two others were killed in separate road accidents at Kadamtoli and Darussalam in the city Sunday morning.


At Kadamtoli, Mohammad Sumon, a helper of a bus died on the spot at about 7.30 AM hit by a speeding bus near the Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge at Postagola as he was crossing the road.


Son of Abbas Ali, Sumon came from Shibchar upazila of Madaripur district and worked as the helper of Jhilik Paribahan.


At Darussalam, bus driver Mohammad Toyeb Ali, died on the spot run over by a speeding bus as he was walking down the road.


He had just left his house and was on his way to the garage near the Darussalam Bus Stand to take out a bus at about 5.30 AM.


The police said that they sent his body to DMCH morgue for autopsy.
